Claude Moore Physician Leadership Institute
Physicians often find themselves in positions of leadership
– within their practices, their health systems, their communities,
and the larger health arena. While medical school has prepared them
to successfully overcome a wide variety of clinical challenges, it is
unlikely to have supplied the basic principles and practices of effective
leadership. The Medical Society of Virginia Foundation (MSVF), through
a five-year grant from the Claude Moore Charitable Foundation and with
support from HCA Virginia, established the Claude Moore Physician Leadership
Institute in 2006. This yearlong program is one of only a handful in
the nation that is devoted to providing physicians with formal, ongoing
leadership training. The goal of the Institute is to produce a network
of physician leaders who work individually and together to effectively
advance health and health care in Virginia.

Customized Physician Leadership Development
The Medical Society of Virginia Foundation offers customized
physician leadership development sessions for health systems and other
interested organizations. The program is designed to provide practical
training and resources to assist physicians in their daily environments,
both in their practice and within their larger organization or community.
MSVF recommends topics such as Physician Leadership Fundamentals, State
and National Healthcare Policy Trends, Marketing and Media 101, Effective
People Skills, Health System Financials, and Organizational Change Management.
Additional topics can be selected based on an organization’s needs.
Sessions are conducted by respected local, state, and national speakers.
These sessions offer Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit hours
through the Office of Continuing Professional Development and Evaluation
Studies at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine.

Program Recognition:
“The Medical Society of Virginia Foundation has
started a new program to make today's doctors tomorrow's leaders. Virginia
is among a growing number of states in which medical societies and their
foundations offer leadership programs to teach physicians how to be
community leaders...a growing trend in organized medicine.”

Here’s what participants are saying about
MSVF's Physician Leadership programs:
“I have long been interested in playing a leadership
role in my practice, my hospital, but I lacked so many of the tools
to be effective. I will need to practice utilizing facets of what I
have learned, but already I believe it is making a difference in the
way I approach issue.”
“An excellent combination of topics, readings, and
speakers. And an inspiring group of individual physician Fellows.”
“Each speaker gave me something – each touched
on a different facet of my life/role and it will take time to better
absorb, understand, and incorporate the gems I grasped.”
“Thank you – an intense, extremely valuable
session! Well-planned, well run.”
"I wanted to learn how to become a better leader
and physician and the training met these goals."
"It opened my eyes to many different skills and
put into words leadership skills."
"Good overview to start with many helpful topics."
"Many qualities were outlined as a leader that I
either did not know about or disregarded as unimportant but were brought
to the forefront."
"Gave me a clear understanding of what a leader
is and what skill set is necessary to be an effective leader."
