The Importance of Addressing Obesity and Health Literacy in
the Free Clinic Setting

This day-long continuing medical education course included
presentations by experts on the following topics: obesity, recruitment
of health care professionals to volunteer at the State’s free
clinics, the use of a web-enabled system for specialty referrals, and
the role of free clinics in promoting health literacy.

Experts provided physicians with methods they could use to
efficiently incorporate mental health screening and treatment into their
primary care practice during this continuing medical education seminar.
Special instruction was provided on accomplishing this in the free clinic
setting. The seminar also included prescribing protocols for the use
of psycho pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical access issues for low-income
patients.

This Forum focused on the recruitment and retention of
volunteer physicians and the occurrence and treatment of chronic diseases
in the free clinic setting. Using the results of a survey sent to the
Virginia Free Clinic Association members, an overview was provided regarding
recruitment strategies that work best for free clinic staff and current
volunteers. The group also discussed the need for treatment protocols
that can be best applied to chronic disease patients in the Free Clinic
setting.

The Role of Free Clinic Medical Directors

and sponsored by MSV Foundation focused on the roles and responsibilities
of Virginia’s free clinic medical directors. Topics included:
