Educational Opportunities
Addressing Racial & Ethnic Health Disparities
The
Medical Society of Virginia Foundation hosted a series of continuing
medical education programs in 2004 entitled “Addressing Racial
and Ethnic Health Disparities.” The keynote speaker at these events
was Dr. Robert Like, an internationally renowned expert on cross-cultural
health care, from the Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine. These
powerful seminars presented information concerning the necessity of
having health care providers who have the ability to communicate with
and understand the needs of the increasingly diverse cultures represented
in Virginia and across the country. Dr. Like provided information on
how to recognize these special needs and identified techniques that
providers can use to deliver culturally sensitive care.
These seminars were held at the University of Virginia School of Medicine
and at Eastern Virginia Medical School, with approximately 150 physician,
medical student, and other health care professional attendees. To support
the enthusiasm and ideas generated at these events, the MSV Foundation
created a grant initiative to address the issues associated with racial
and ethnic disparities in health care. Two
projects were awarded $10,000 each to support innovative ideas to improve
the quality of care provided to cultural minorities.
As part of the Cultural Diversity conference, a notebook was compiled
that provides valuable information for health care providers who want
to better serve their diverse patient population. This information was
collected and largely written by Dr. Like.
