The Impact of the Medicare Modernization Act on Physician Practices
Barry M. Straube, MD
Chief Medical Officer, Office of Clinical Standards & Quality
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
The impact of Medicare on the physician practice is growing rapidly
in importance. Not only is the percentage of the population eligible
for Medicare skyrocketing, but the changes being made to the program
are complex and often difficult for patients and physicians to understand.
Dr. Straube's presentation helps shed some light on a few of these changes.
Among other items, he provides information about the impact of Medicare
Modernization on physician practices and patient benefits.

What are Health Courts and are They Right for Virginia?
Daniel Carey, MD
Medical Director, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, Lynchburg General
Hospital
Partner, Cardiovascular Associates of Central Virginia
Chair, Tort Reform Task Force, Medical Society of Virginia
Dr. Carey offers his perspective, as chair of the MSV's Tort Reform
Task Force, on the current medical liability climate in Virginia, what
is and is not politically feasible at this time and the Task Force's
present activities regarding significant tort reform. The Health Courts
concept is an idea that is gaining support across a broad spectrum of
health care practitioners and policymakers. It is seen by many as a
way to bring both justice and fairness back to the medical liability
arena that is also consistent with the increasingly progressive steps
made in patient safety and quality of care.
