The Medical Society of Virginia Foundation invites you to share in our vision by becoming a member of the 1820 Society.

Remembering the MSV Foundation in your will is a special way to commemorate a lifetime of work. Your gift will enable the Foundation to become – and remain – the most influential, trusted, and recognized vehicle for creating and nurturing a caring health and disease prevention environment in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

By becoming a member of the 1820 Society, you are making an investment in the health of Virginia. An estate gift to the MSV Foundation makes possible the programs and partnerships that improve the health of our communities, and ensures that these efforts are built to last.

Your gift will not only enhance the Foundation’s mission of serving as a catalyst to advance the health status of all Virginians, but it will also qualify for government estate tax charitable deductions.

How do I include the Medical Society of Virginia Foundation in my will?

There are three ways you can make a bequest to the MSV Foundation:

  • Specific Bequest: You designate a specific dollar amount, specific percentage, or specific property to the Medical Society of Virginia Foundation.
  • Residual Bequest: Your estate will pay all debts, taxes, expenses, and specific bequests. The remaining amount— the residue—will be transferred to the Medical Society of Virginia Foundation.
  • Contingent Bequest:
You can ask that the Medical Society of Virginia Foundation receive all or a portion of your estate only under certain circumstances. For example, you can name the Medical Society of Virginia Foundation as a beneficiary of your estate only if there are no other surviving beneficiaries.

To make a bequest to the MSV Foundation, the following language will be helpful to your lawyer: I give, devise and bequeath to the Medical Society of Virginia Foundation, a nonprofit organization located in Richmond, Virginia, the sum of $________ (or otherwise describe the gift or specify the
percentage of the estate).

How will I be remembered for my gift?

The MSV Foundation’s 1820 Society honors those who have remembered the Foundation in their wills through several types of recognition:

  • Members are presented with an 1820 Society pin, which can be worn proudly at society events.
  • Special recognition in society publications including MSV’s Virginia Medical News and the Foundation’s Annual Report.
  • Special recognition on the MSV Foundation’s website.
  • Invitation to an annual special event held to thank 1820 Society members. If you plan to or have already made the MSV Foundation a beneficiary of your estate plan, please contact the Foundation offices so that we may thank you for sharing in our vision. Please be assured that we will keep you informed as to how your gift will be used and give you the opportunity to tell us your wishes.

Please let us know if you have remembered the MSV Foundation in your will, and advise us as to how you would like to be recognized. Simply complete the Bequest Advisory Form, and rest assured that we will adhere to your wishes.
