Priorities The MSV Foundation concentrates its efforts in several priority
areas, developing cross-cutting, sustainable programs and initiatives
that employ one or more strategies to achieve its mission. The MSV Foundation’s
areas of emphasis are:
Advancing opportunities for the physician community to participate
in health improvement efforts, with special effort to address the
needs of the uninsured and underserved.
Developing avenues for the physician community to leverage their
capacity as volunteers to improve the health of Virginians.
Building relationships with organization, coalitions, or initiatives
in which the involvement of the physician community would significantly
enhance efforts to address specific health issues in Virginia.
Supporting educational programs for the physician community and
the public that advance the mission and vision of the Foundation.
Acting as a Catalyst
Established
in 1986 as a nonprofit subsidiary of the Medical
Society of Virginia (MSV), the Medical Society of Virginia Foundation
is a charitable partnership between the MSV and the MSV
Alliance. Our aim is to leverage the resources of the medical community
to create a healthier Virginia.
Originally created to promote medicine through charitable, scientific
and educational purposes, the MSV Foundation’s primary activity
in its early years was to provide low-cost loans and scholarships to
medical students.
In
the mid-1990s, it expanded these activities to include supporting physicians
willing to locate in medically underserved areas and sponsoring educational
and research programs. Throughout the nineties, the MSV Foundation quietly
worked behind the scenes to achieve its mission through these areas.
In 1999, the Foundation's parent organization, the Medical Society
of Virginia, underwent a comprehensive reevaluation of its mission and
goals and developed a long-term strategic plan. Along with increased
legislative and practice advocacy for physicians, it renewed its commitment
to promoting improved health and disease prevention for all Virginians.
This new focus was ideally suited for the MSV Foundation, prompting
its leadership to embark on a strategic planning process to redirect
the Foundation’s vision and rejuvenate its activities. As a result,
the MSV Foundation adopted a new mission and vision that were launched
in September 2000.
Since the Fall of 2000, the Medical Society of Virginia Foundation
has made great strides in achieving its vision of improving the health
status of all Virginians. With the leadership of a dynamic Board of
Directors that combines the assets of the physician, alliance, medical
student, and corporate communities, the MSV Foundation has developed
programs and initiatives that make a real difference in the health of
our communities.
"During a time when the practice of medicine is requiring more and
more focus on the 'business' of medicine and less on the human aspects,
the MSV Foundation enables us to give back in an organized and cohesive
way. It is an important outlet for us to express our personal
public service values -- values that originally drew us to the practice
of medicine -- and continue to motivate us today."
